Two suspects have been arrested in connection with the theft of valuable royal jewels worth €88 million from the Louvre Museum in Paris, French media reported.
According to the Paris prosecutor’s office, one of the suspects was detained as he attempted to board a flight departing from Charles de Gaulle Airport.
The theft, carried out in the early hours of Tuesday, involved four thieves who used power tools to break into the museum — the world’s most visited cultural institution — and steal the jewels.
France’s Justice Minister has admitted that the museum’s security measures had failed, describing the incident as a serious blow to the country’s international image.
In a statement, the Paris prosecutor’s office confirmed that the arrests were made on Saturday but did not disclose the total number of people taken into custody.
Police sources told French media that one suspect was preparing to travel to Algeria, while the other had plans to leave for Mali.
However, the prosecutor criticized the leaking of details related to the case, warning that such disclosures could hinder ongoing efforts to recover the stolen jewels and capture the remaining suspects.
