Manipur was hit by two consecutive earthquakes on Wednesday, including one with a magnitude of 5.7, which shook the region and caused tremors to be felt across Northeast India, officials confirmed.
The first earthquake, measuring 5.7 in magnitude, struck at 11:06 am, with its epicenter located 44 km east of Yairipok in Imphal East district at a depth of 110 km, according to the Regional Seismological Centre in Shillong. The tremors were felt in neighboring states, including Assam and Meghalaya.
A second earthquake of magnitude 4.1 hit Manipur at 12:20 pm, centered in the Kamjong district at a depth of 66 km.
In the aftermath of the quakes, cracks were observed in several buildings across Manipur. Social media videos showed significant damage to a school building in Wangjing Lamding, located in Thoubal district, where a relief camp for those affected by ethnic strife had been set up.
“We are confirming the reports of the damage,” an official in Imphal said.
No significant damage has been reported so far in other states of the region.
