The United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia have officially recognized Palestine as a state, according to foreign media reports, marking a significant diplomatic move that increases pressure on Israel.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney made the announcement on behalf of Canada, stating:
“Canada recognizes the state of Palestine and offers our partnership to build the promise of a peaceful future for the State of Palestine and the State of Israel. Recognizing a Palestinian state led by the Palestinian Authority empowers those who seek peaceful coexistence and the end of Hamas. This in no way legitimizes terrorism and is not an encouragement for it.”
With this decision, Canada becomes the first G7 nation to officially recognize Palestine.
In Australia, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong issued a joint statement confirming their country’s recognition of Palestine as a sovereign state.
“Australia recognizes the legitimate and long-standing aspirations of the Palestinian people for a state of their own,” the statement said.
Meanwhile, reports indicate that France, Belgium, and Portugal have also decided to recognize Palestine as a state.
