The University Grants Commission (UGC) has received approval to recruit new lecturers to address vacancies in state universities.
Professor Kapila Seneviratne, Chairman of the UGC, announced that the decision was made following discussions with Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya. Two rounds of discussions led to an agreement to fill 50% of the existing vacancies.
The vacancies primarily arose due to a significant number of lecturers leaving the country for various reasons. The Chairman also highlighted a critical shortage of lecturers in newly established medical faculties.
This recruitment initiative is expected to strengthen academic staffing in universities and support the growing demand in specialized fields such as medicine.
