Amid ongoing criticism of the United National Party (UNP), its former Deputy Leader and current Member of Parliament, Ravi Karunanayake, says the party laid the foundation for an investor-friendly economy in Sri Lanka.
Speaking to the media, Karunanayake highlighted the transformative policies introduced by former President J.R. Jayewardene in 1977, noting that they marked a turning point in the country’s economic trajectory.
“What J.R. Jayewardene did was revolutionary at the time,” he said. “Without the establishment of free trade zones, where would Sri Lanka’s economy be today?”
Karunanayake expressed concern that the country is now moving in the opposite direction, warning that even the few remaining trade zones risk being lost if current trends continue.
