UNP’s Defeat in Colombo Shows the Impact of Internal Sabotage

Former Deputy Leader of the United National Party (UNP), MP Ravi Karunanayake, has blamed internal party sabotage for the UNP’s defeat in the Colombo Municipal Council at this year’s local government elections.

Speaking to ceylonwire.lk, Karunanayake said that the actions of certain individuals within the party—whom he referred to as “demons”—are to blame for the loss. “These two individuals sidelined senior members and ran the party according to their personal agendas,” he alleged.

He emphasized that this internal mismanagement led even loyal party members to turn their backs on the UNP. “The only crisis the party faces today is the way these two figures have disrupted and taken control of its direction,” he added.

Karunanayake’s comments reflect growing discontent among senior UNP members amid the party’s ongoing decline in electoral performance.
