The United States Department of State has issued a worldwide travel advisory, urging American citizens to exercise increased caution due to escalating tensions in the Middle East and the risk of further conflict.
In a statement released on Saturday (local time), the State Department said the security situation in the region remains complex, with the potential for unforeseen escalation amid ongoing military operations involving the United States and Iran.
The Department advised Americans, particularly those in the Middle East, to closely monitor developments and follow guidance issued by the nearest US embassy or consulate.
“We remind Americans in the region of the continued need for caution and encourage them to monitor the news for breaking developments,” the statement said.
The advisory also warned that flight cancellations and temporary airspace closures could disrupt travel as regional tensions continue to affect aviation operations.
In addition, the State Department noted that US diplomatic missions, including those outside the Middle East, have previously been targeted and warned that groups supportive of Iran could also target US interests or locations associated with Americans overseas.
The advisory comes amid renewed tensions between the United States and Iran following the collapse of a 14-point memorandum of understanding signed last month, which aimed to end hostilities and facilitate negotiations on Iran’s nuclear programme and maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz.
The breakdown of the agreement has led to renewed military exchanges, with the US carrying out strikes on Iranian military targets and Iran responding with retaliatory attacks on American bases across the Gulf.
