More than 500 newly qualified Sri Lankan lawyers have received training in trial advocacy and criminal law best practices through a programme conducted by the Sri Lanka Bar Association, with support from the United States Department of Justice.
The US Embassy in Colombo said the programme focused on strengthening the legal education of newly admitted attorneys, helping them develop practical courtroom skills and a deeper understanding of criminal law procedures.
The training was implemented under the Office of Overseas Prosecutors’ Development, Assistance, and Training (OPDAT) of the US Department of Justice.
According to the embassy, the initiative forms part of ongoing US–Sri Lanka legal cooperation, aimed at enhancing professional standards within the legal sector.
The programme also seeks to strengthen the capacity of Sri Lanka’s legal community to address transnational crimes and organised criminal networks that pose threats to the security and economic prosperity of both countries.
The US Embassy noted that new lawyers represent the future of the judiciary and emphasised that continuing legal education is an essential component of effective legal practice.
