Wholesale vegetable prices at the Dambulla Dedicated Economic Centre have risen sharply, driven by severe crop losses caused by recent heavy rains and landslides.
According to traders, the destruction of large numbers of vegetable plots has led to a significant shortage in supply, resulting in notable price hikes across several commonly purchased items.
Currently, carrots are being sold between Rs. 700 and Rs. 1,000 per kilogram, while beans and leeks are priced between Rs. 500 and Rs. 800 per kilogram.
The price of pumpkin, which previously sold for around Rs. 30 per kilogram, has now surged to Rs. 100–130.
Traders expect prices to remain elevated in the coming days unless weather conditions improve and supply chains stabilise.
