Vegetable Prices Likely to Rise Amid Ongoing Adverse Weather

May 16, 2026

Vegetable prices in Sri Lanka are expected to increase in the coming days as continuing adverse weather conditions disrupt supplies across the country.

Traders have warned that persistent rainfall could reduce harvests and transportation capacity, leading to shortages in local markets and higher prices for consumers.

Former chairman of the Manning Market Traders Association, S. M. Upasena, stated that although vegetable supplies remain stable at present, shortages are likely in the near future.

According to Upasena, a reduction in supply is expected to push prices upward in the coming days.

He also noted that vegetable sales have declined over the past two days due to the prevailing bad weather conditions.

“We have not seen many people coming to the market due to the bad weather,” he said.

Traders fear that if heavy rains continue, both supply chains and market activity could face further disruptions.
