Vegetable Supply Manageable Despite 20% Production Drop, Says Essential Services Chief

December 13, 2025

Vegetable production in key districts such as Nuwara Eliya has declined by around 20 percent due to weather-related disasters, but the situation is not a major concern, Commissioner General of Essential Services Prabhat Chandrakeerthy said.

He stated that, in view of the improving supply situation, the government has suspended its decision to allow the import of frozen vegetables.

“Following the disaster, vegetable prices rose sharply. Prices have now declined, although they have not returned to pre-disaster levels. Reports from major vegetable-growing areas such as Nuwara Eliya indicate a supply reduction of about 20 percent, but we are still able to meet market demand,” Chandrakeerthy said.

He added that there is no shortage of other essential commodities, including rice.

Chandrakeerthy also noted that the government appointed a Commissioner General of Essential Services in the aftermath of the disaster to ensure the continuous supply of essential goods.
