Victor Ivan, a renowned journalist, political critic, and former Editor of the Ravaya newspaper, has passed away at the age of 75, according to his family. He reportedly died while receiving treatment at a hospital, where he had been admitted for several months due to an illness.
A pivotal figure in investigative journalism and social activism, Ivan was also an accomplished author. His career began in 1986 during a tumultuous period in Sri Lanka, marked by youth insurrections.
Ivan launched Ravaya as a monthly magazine, which quickly gained popularity and later evolved into a tabloid-sized weekly newspaper known for exposing corruption and wrongdoing. He served as its Editor for 25 consecutive years from its inception.
In addition to journalism, Ivan authored several notable books, including Chaurya Rajina in Sinhala, a critique of former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga’s administration, which was later translated into English as The Queen of Deceit. His other works include Pansale Viplawaya, translated into English as Revolt in the Temple – The Buddhist Revival up to Gangodawila Soma Thera.
Ivan’s passing marks the end of an era in Sri Lankan journalism, where his contributions to political discourse and media activism remain significant.
