The Wages Board has approved a daily minimum wage of Rs. 1,700 for plantation workers, following a decision passed today (12) with a majority of 14 votes in favor from plantation companies.
Minister of Water Supply and Estate Infrastructure Development, Jeevan Thondaman, confirmed that only three plantation companies opposed the decision.
The new wage structure includes a basic daily wage of Rs. 1,350, supplemented by a special attendance allowance of Rs. 350.
When the wage issue was presented to the High Court, Eastern Province Governor and President of the Ceylon Workers’ Congress (CWC), Senthil Thondaman, expressed his gratitude to President Ranil Wickremesinghe and former Minister Manusha Nanayakkara for their support in increasing the daily minimum wage for plantation workers.
Thondaman also emphasized that the CWC has proposed the Rs. 1,700 wage and is fully committed to ensuring its implementation.
