The Department of Meteorology has issued a Warm Weather Advisory for tomorrow (24), warning of rising heat levels in several provinces and districts across the country.
According to the advisory, the Heat Index — the temperature felt by the human body — is expected to reach the ‘Caution’ level in parts of the Northern, North-Central, North-Western, Western, and Sabaragamuwa provinces, as well as in Galle and Matara districts.
At the ‘Caution’ level, prolonged exposure and physical activity may lead to fatigue, while continued exertion could result in heat cramps.
The public is strongly advised to take necessary precautions, including:
- Staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
- Taking regular breaks in shaded areas.
- Limiting strenuous outdoor activities.
- Checking on the elderly and those who are unwell.
- Never leaving children unattended inside vehicles.
- Wearing lightweight, white, or light-coloured clothing to stay cool.
The Heat Index Forecast, which combines relative humidity and maximum temperature, reflects how hot it feels to the human body. It is not the same as the maximum temperature forecast. The advisory is based on data generated using global numerical weather prediction models for the upcoming day.
