Former Deputy Leader of the United National Party and Member of Parliament Ravi Karunanayake has called on the government to clarify the outcome of its discussions with the United States on reducing tariffs.
Speaking at a media briefing held today, the MP noted that several countries have recently held similar negotiations with the US and achieved positive outcomes. He urged the government to be transparent about whether Sri Lanka’s talks were successful or not.
Karunanayake also suggested that it would be more beneficial for the country to initiate discussions on importing liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the United States, given its potential to strengthen the energy sector.
Commenting further, he criticized the decision to halt LNG import discussions with India and instead pursue talks with China, calling it a failed and misguided shift in policy.
