WHO Urges China to Share Data on Covid-19 Origins on Fifth Anniversary of Pandemic

The World Health Organization (WHO) has called on China to provide transparent data on the origins of the Covid-19 pandemic, marking five years since the virus first emerged in Wuhan.

In a statement, the WHO described this as both a “moral and scientific imperative,” emphasizing that global prevention and preparedness for future pandemics hinge on cooperation and information sharing among nations.

Persistent Uncertainty Over Covid-19’s Origins

While many scientists believe the virus likely transferred from animals to humans in a market setting, suspicions of a laboratory leak in Wuhan remain unresolved. In September, a team of scientists argued that it was “beyond reasonable doubt” that the pandemic originated from infected animals sold at a market.

China has not yet responded to the latest WHO statement but has previously dismissed the lab-leak theory.

WHO’s Early Efforts

The WHO recounted its initial response to Covid-19, starting with its Country Office in China identifying reports of “viral pneumonia” in Wuhan on December 31, 2019. By early January 2020, the organization had activated emergency protocols, issued guidance to countries, and facilitated the development of the first SARS-CoV-2 laboratory test.

Honoring Lives and Lessons Learned

The WHO paid tribute to the millions affected by Covid-19, including healthcare workers who bore the brunt of the pandemic. It reiterated its commitment to learning from the crisis to strengthen global health systems.

In May 2023, the WHO declared that Covid-19 was no longer a global health emergency but cautioned against complacency. Director General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned that the world must remain vigilant, as the next pandemic “can come at any moment.”

Call for Global Collaboration

As the world reflects on the fifth anniversary of Covid-19’s emergence, the WHO’s plea for transparency from China underscores the critical need for international cooperation in preparing for and mitigating future pandemics.
