Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe will remain in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Colombo National Hospital for about two more days, as advised by specialist doctors, Deputy Director Dr. Rukshan Bellana announced today (27).
Speaking at a press briefing, Dr. Bellana confirmed that Wickremesinghe is no longer a detainee and is therefore free to consult his private physician or seek treatment at a private hospital if he wishes.
He noted that the former President was admitted with severe dehydration, which is now improving under medical treatment. “Everyone who comes to the hospital is treated equally, regardless of their background or status,” Dr. Bellana emphasized.
Addressing questions over Wickremesinghe’s medical evaluation, Dr. Bellana explained that a committee appointed by the Director General of the National Hospital is responsible for assessing his health.
Referring to medical findings, he revealed:
“According to the reports released yesterday, three out of four of his coronary arteries are blocked. He requires further treatment, and it should be done quickly for his own benefit. Since he has now been granted bail, he is fully free to obtain care from a private hospital. Specialists expect him to remain in the ICU for another one to two days.”
While his dehydration is subsiding, Dr. Bellana warned that the other diagnosed conditions require urgent attention. “It is difficult to recover from such a serious condition without immediate care. If treatment is delayed, there is a definite risk,” he added.
