World Earth Day is being observed today (22) under the theme “Our Power, Our Planet,” highlighting the global responsibility to protect the environment.
A range of complex environmental challenges is expected in 2026, including climate change, biodiversity loss, ecosystem degradation, and the growing accumulation of industrial waste.
Earth Day was first celebrated on April 22, 1970, in the United States. The initiative was pioneered by Gaylord Nelson and has since evolved into a global movement. Today, it is observed in 193 countries, with participation from more than one billion people worldwide.
Following a resolution adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2009, Earth Day was formally recognised to emphasise the importance of the planet as a system that sustains all forms of life.
The movement originally gained momentum due to growing public concern over threats to human health caused by air and water pollution, largely linked to excessive resource consumption in industrialised nations. This awareness helped drive global environmental advocacy and collective action.
