2243 Deaths in Road Accidents in Sri Lanka in 2024, Police Report

As of December 13, 2024, the Sri Lankan police report a tragic toll of 2243 deaths from road accidents. This includes 2141 fatal accidents, which represent 9% of all recorded incidents during the year, amounting to 22,967 total road accidents.

Breakdown of Accident Statistics

  • Serious Accidents: 6500 incidents
  • Minor Accidents: 9127 incidents

Recent Fatalities and Injuries

Yesterday, five people lost their lives, and 56 others sustained injuries in multiple accidents:

  • A bus plunged into a precipice in Maliappuwa, Hatton, killing three and injuring 46.
  • A collision between a van and a lorry on the Southern Expressway between Baddegama and Pinnaduwa led to the deaths of two individuals and left six others injured.
  • In Kadugannawa, a bus collided with a tree, injuring ten people.
