48cc Motorcycles Must Be Registered Before Use on Public Roads, DMT Warns

October 22, 2026

The Department of Motor Traffic has warned that motorcycles with an engine capacity of 48cc must be registered before being used on public roads, despite claims by some sellers that registration is not required.

Director General of the Department of Motor Traffic, Thushara Indunil Fernando, said riders using unregistered motorcycles on public roads could face fines if caught by the police.

The warning follows reports that some motorcycle sellers have been telling customers that 48cc motorcycles are exempt from registration requirements.

The Department has advised buyers to verify the applicable registration requirements before purchasing such motorcycles rather than relying solely on information provided by sellers.

Motorists have also been urged to ensure that their vehicles comply with the relevant legal requirements before using them on public roads.
