Sri Lanka Customs has announced that 75,000 metric tons of imported rice have been cleared for distribution as of this morning (December 29). The consignment comprises 32,000 metric tons of raw rice and 43,000 metric tons of Nadu rice.
This clearance comes as part of the government’s initiative to address domestic rice demands by extending the rice importation period until January 10, 2025. Rice clearance activities resumed on December 26, with 72,000 metric tons processed by December 27.
Seevali Arukgoda, Media Spokesperson and Additional Director General of Customs, highlighted the implementation of a special system to expedite the release of imported rice. This streamlined process involves close collaboration between food inspectors and plant quarantine officers to ensure the efficient clearance of shipments, he said.
The government’s initiative aims to stabilize rice supply and maintain affordability for consumers across the country.
