The United Nations Security Council is set to work on a statement regarding the situation in Syria, following a closed-door meeting addressing the rebel seizure of Damascus and the ousting of President Bashar al-Assad.
Russian U.N. Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia stated that the council largely agreed on key priorities: preserving Syria’s territorial integrity, protecting civilians, and ensuring humanitarian aid delivery to those in need.
Syria’s U.N. Ambassador, Koussay Aldahhak, emphasized that Syrian embassies and missions abroad have been instructed to maintain operations and state institutions during the transitional period.
Russia, a longstanding ally of Assad, has used its Security Council veto power more than a dozen times throughout the Syrian conflict, often with support from China, to shield Assad’s government from international actions.
The Security Council has convened regularly during the war to address Syria’s political crisis, humanitarian challenges, and chemical weapon issues.
