Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a series of collaborative initiatives with Sri Lanka, including the supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Sri Lankan power plants, the connection of the two countries’ power grids, and the construction of a petroleum pipeline. The announcement came during a joint press briefing with Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake in New Delhi.
As part of India’s continued developmental support, PM Modi highlighted plans to collaborate on a Unique Digital Identity Program for Sri Lanka.
“India has so far provided $5 billion in line of credit and grant assistance to Sri Lanka. Our projects span all 25 districts of Sri Lanka, with selections always based on the partner country’s development priorities,” Modi emphasized.
Major Developmental Initiatives
PM Modi announced India’s decision to assist with the rehabilitation of the Maho-Anuradhapura railway signalling system and the Kankesanthurai Port, key projects aimed at enhancing connectivity and trade infrastructure.
Further, Modi outlined new initiatives under India’s developmental cooperation with Sri Lanka:
- Scholarships for 200 students from the universities of Jaffna and Eastern Province, starting next year.
- Training for 1,500 Sri Lankan civil servants in India over the next five years.
He also stressed India’s involvement in critical sectors such as housing, renewable energy, agriculture, dairy, fisheries, and infrastructure development, underscoring India’s comprehensive approach to supporting Sri Lanka’s growth.
President Dissanayake’s visit to India marks his first foreign trip since assuming office in September. Ahead of the bilateral talks, he was accorded a ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
The announcements reflect India’s deepening commitment to strengthening economic, energy, and developmental ties with its island neighbor.
