A recent Pew Research Center survey of more than 42,000 people across 36 countries has found generally positive views of India, with Sri Lanka recording the most favourable perception of the country.

According to the figures cited, 79% of Sri Lankans expressed a positive view of India, while 63% identified India as a major ally.
India’s assistance to Sri Lanka during the 2022 economic crisis, including more than US$7.5 billion in financial and credit support, is cited as an important factor behind the close relationship between the two countries.
Globally, 45% of respondents expressed a favourable view of India, compared with 41% who held an unfavourable opinion.
In Asia, India received favourable views from Japan (55%), Thailand (55%), Singapore (51%) and Indonesia (50%). Negative views were recorded in Bangladesh (51%) and Malaysia (58%).
Pakistan recorded the most negative view of India, with 91% expressing an unfavourable opinion. The figures reflect longstanding tensions between the two countries, including the 2025 military clashes and subsequent developments.
Views of India were also relatively negative in Turkey, the West Bank and Australia, while opinion in the United States was divided, with 45% holding a favourable view and 50% an unfavourable view.
Overall, the survey indicates that India’s image remains comparatively strong in parts of Asia and Africa, while perceptions are more mixed in Europe and Latin America.
