The Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils, and Local Government has announced that proposed legal amendments to annul nominations submitted for the 2023 Provincial Council elections have been referred to the Attorney General for review.

Subject Minister Professor Chandana Abeyratne stated that the amendments have been finalized by legal drafters and are now awaiting the Attorney General’s recommendations.

Once the review is complete, the proposal will be presented to the Cabinet and subsequently tabled in Parliament for approval.

The decision to annul the 2023 nominations was made by the Cabinet, based on a consensus reached among political party leaders. The Minister assured that the amendments will be expedited to facilitate the legislative process.
