Specialist Indika de Lanerolle from the National Hospital has raised concerns about the decreasing age of individuals suffering from heart disease in Sri Lanka, with the age now as low as 17.
Previously, heart disease primarily affected individuals aged between 50 and 70, but Dr. de Lanerolle highlighted that this age range is gradually decreasing, a trend also seen in developed countries. This shift raises questions about the connection between heart disease and the country’s development.
Dr. de Lanerolle noted that hospitals in the U.S. and Europe are equipped to insert a stent within 60 minutes of diagnosing heart disease, and some foreign hospitals extend this time to 120 minutes. However, he emphasized that if a stent cannot be inserted within 20 to 30 minutes, alternative medications should be used to prevent a heart attack.
