AHRC Urges President to Implement Critical Legal Reforms in Sri Lanka

The Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has called on Sri Lanka’s President, Anura Kumara Dissanayake, to take swift action to implement key legal reforms aimed at restoring the rule of law in the country.

In a written appeal, Basil Fernando, Director of Policy and Programs at the AHRC, outlined urgent deficiencies in Sri Lanka’s legal and judicial systems that require immediate attention.

The AHRC emphasized three critical reform areas:

  1. Expediting Judicial Processes: Ensuring daily hearings for serious criminal cases in the High Courts to minimize delays and improve justice delivery.
  2. Strengthening Anti-Corruption Measures: Introducing comprehensive legislation to combat bribery and corruption, a step seen as vital for restoring public trust in governance.
  3. Reforming the Attorney General’s Department: Enhancing the independence, efficiency, and transparency of the department to ensure fairer legal proceedings.

The AHRC’s appeal underscores the necessity of these reforms to uphold justice, accountability, and public confidence in Sri Lanka’s legal system.
