Sri Lanka Targets 3 Million Tourists in 2025, Aiming for $5 Billion in Revenue

Sri Lanka is setting its sights on a transformative year for tourism in 2025, with an ambitious goal of attracting 3 million international visitors and generating $5 billion in revenue. This vision follows a robust recovery trajectory, with projected arrivals of 2.1 million in 2024 and steadily increasing revenues.

Strategic Reforms to Bolster Tourism
The Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA), led by newly appointed chairman Buddhika Hewawasam, is driving several key initiatives to strengthen the sector. A National Tourism Commission is being established to consolidate four state agencies under a unified framework for streamlined operations and policy execution.

Additionally, a Tourism Policy Formulation Council comprising multidisciplinary experts will provide strategic guidance. Announced at the recently revived Sri Lanka Tourism Awards, these initiatives highlight the government’s focus on fostering industry excellence.

Tourism Performance and Revenue Growth
Tourism revenue surged from $1.1 billion in 2022 to $2.1 billion in 2023, with $2.8 billion recorded from January to November 2024. Tourist arrivals also rose significantly, with 1.8 million visitors in the same period of 2024 compared to 1.3 million in 2023. Key markets include India, Russia, the UK, Germany, and China.

Leveraging Unique Cultural and Natural Attractions
Sri Lanka continues to captivate travelers with its rich cultural heritage, historical landmarks such as Sigiriya and Anuradhapura, and iconic destinations like the Nine Arch Bridge. Its lush landscapes, pristine beaches, and vibrant festivals further solidify its appeal.

Challenges and Recovery Efforts
The sector faced significant setbacks due to the Covid-19 pandemic and an economic crisis, prompting government efforts to secure IMF support and implement debt restructuring. Infrastructure development, simplified visa processes, and international collaborations, such as plans for a direct air route with Japan, underscore the government’s commitment to revitalizing tourism.

Sustainability at the Core
Sri Lanka is prioritizing sustainable tourism by promoting eco-tourism and preserving its natural and cultural resources. Responsible travel practices are integral to ensuring the long-term success of the industry.

Outlook for 2025
With a clear strategy, innovative reforms, and an emphasis on sustainable practices, Sri Lanka is poised to reclaim its status as a premier travel destination. The target of 3 million tourists represents not just a milestone but a testament to the nation’s resilience and vision for the future.
