The Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team (CERT) has warned the public about extortion attempts being carried out through social media platforms such as WhatsApp and Messenger.
Information Security Engineer at Sri Lanka CERT Charuka Damunupola said scammers often deceive victims into sharing sensitive photos or videos and then demand money, threatening to publish the content on social media.
He urged the public not to respond to messages or requests from unknown individuals or share sensitive content with them.
Damunupola further advised anyone who becomes a victim of such an extortion scam to immediately report the incident to the nearest police station.
