The UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) will review the status of women’s rights in Sri Lanka during its upcoming session from February 3 to 21.
Sri Lanka is among eight countries undergoing review, alongside Nepal, Belarus, Luxembourg, Belize, Congo, Liechtenstein, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), which will present a special report on sexual violence in conflict.
As part of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, these nations are required to undergo regular assessments by 23 independent experts to evaluate their progress on gender equality and women’s rights.
CEDAW has received country reports and submissions from national human rights institutions, NGOs, and other sources for the upcoming reviews.
Sri Lanka’s public review session is scheduled for February 13 (10:00 – 13:00; 15:00 – 17:00 Geneva time).
