Sri Lanka plans to set up five elephant corridors in the North Central Province to mitigate rising human-elephant conflicts, according to media reports.
The province has recorded the highest number of such incidents in the country, with 27 out of its 29 Divisional Secretariat Divisions experiencing a sharp increase in recent years.
Authorities aim to tackle the issue by establishing the corridors, preventing encroachment on protected areas, managing elephant habitats through grassland cultivation, and rehabilitating water tanks in conservation zones.
Human-elephant conflict remains a significant concern in Sri Lanka, with official data showing that in 2024 alone, 388 wild elephants and 155 people lost their lives due to such encounters.
