Severe Lightning and Thundershowers Forecast: Public Urged to Take Precautions

The Department of Meteorology has warned that thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning are likely to occur at several locations across the Eastern, Uva, Central, and North-Central provinces, as well as in the Hambantota, Vavuniya, Kilinochchi, and Mullaitivu districts.

Issuing an advisory, the Department noted that temporary localized strong winds are also possible during thundershowers.

The public is therefore urged to take adequate precautions to minimize the risk of lightning-related incidents. People are advised to seek shelter indoors during thunderstorms and avoid taking cover under trees. Additionally, it is recommended to stay away from open areas such as paddy fields, tea plantations, and open water bodies.

The advisory also warns against using wired telephones and connected electrical appliances during thunderstorms and advises refraining from traveling in open vehicles such as bicycles, tractors, and boats. The public is further requested to remain alert for fallen trees and power lines.

For emergency assistance, residents are advised to contact their local disaster management authorities.
