Weather Alert: Heavy Rainfall and Strong Winds Expected Across Sri Lanka Today

The Department of Meteorology has issued a warning of fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 75 mm in some areas of Sri Lanka today, with occasional showers expected elsewhere.

Showers or thundershowers are forecast at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and North-western provinces, as well as the districts of Nuwara Eliya, Kandy, Galle, and Matara.

Strong winds ranging between 40-50 km/h are anticipated at times over the western slopes of the central hills, and across the Northern, North-central, Southern, and North-western provinces, including the Trincomalee and Monaragala districts.

Marine Advisory:
Naval and fishing communities are strongly advised to avoid venturing into certain sea areas until further notice due to strong winds and rough seas.

  • Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the sea areas off the coast from Puttalam to Hambantota, passing through Colombo and Galle.

  • Winds will be south-westerly around the island, generally at 40-50 km/h, occasionally reaching 60-70 km/h in sea areas off the coasts of Chilaw to Kankasanthurai (via Puttalam and Mannar) and Matara to Pottuvil (via Hambantota).

  • Wind speeds of 30-40 km/h, increasing to 50-55 km/h at times, are expected off the coasts from Chilaw to Matara (via Colombo) and from Kankasanthurai to Trincomalee (via Mullaittivu).

The sea areas off Chilaw to Kankasanthurai and Matara to Pottuvil will be very rough at times, with wave heights potentially reaching 2.0 to 3.0 meters in areas from Mannar to Pottuvil (via Puttalam, Colombo, Galle, and Hambantota). Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas may accompany thundershowers.

Mariners and fishing communities are urged to exercise extreme caution and adhere to official advisories.
