Cardinal Criticizes Legalization of Same-Sex Marriage: “How Can Two Men Build a Family?”

Delivering a sermon during a religious ceremony at St. Anne’s Church in Beruwala, Archbishop Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith strongly criticized the growing acceptance of same-sex marriage, asserting that it is not a human right and should not be legalized.

The Cardinal expressed concern over what he described as the spread of “corrupt ideologies” in contemporary society, particularly those that, in his view, erode long-standing moral and spiritual values. He singled out the promotion of same-sex unions as an example of such trends, warning that they undermine the foundation of the traditional family unit.

“How can two men build a family? How can they have children?” the Cardinal questioned, emphasizing that marriage must be rooted in a deeper moral and spiritual understanding rather than being treated as a casual or temporary arrangement.

He further criticized modern relationship dynamics, noting that many young people enter into romantic partnerships without adequate commitment or awareness. In contrast, he praised traditional arranged marriages, which he said were guided by parental wisdom and resulted in more stable and successful families.

Cardinal Ranjith urged the public to reject what he called “distorted interpretations of human rights,” and to instead safeguard cultural and religious values that uphold the sanctity of marriage and family life.
