Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerasooriya announced that a more advanced strategy has been introduced to combat underworld activities, replacing the existing methods. He emphasized that the new program is being carried out with the support of the tri-forces and the general public.
Speaking to the media in Kandy, following visits to the Chief Prelates of the Asgiri and Malwathu Chapters, the IGP revealed that certain underworld operations and drug trafficking networks had previously received political backing, as well as support from within the police. However, he stressed that there is currently no political interference, and that the government has extended its full support for decisive action against criminal elements.
Commenting on recent incidents, IGP Weerasooriya said that investigations into shootings have already led to several arrests, and that authorities are now advancing with a more sophisticated program in collaboration with other institutions, particularly the tri-forces.
He further noted that drug trafficking and organized killings are long-standing issues that have been facilitated over time through political influence, compromised officers, and even the involvement of military personnel.
Highlighting the international dimension of these crimes, the IGP added that many operations are directed from overseas. Sri Lanka, he said, is now working closely with international partners to track down perpetrators and dismantle these networks.
