Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP S.M. Marikkar today urged the government to reverse its decision to ban aircraft from flying over the Parliament complex, warning that such a move could negatively impact the tourism industry.
“We have heard that a move has been taken to ban aircraft from flying over the Parliament complex. We urge the government to reverse this decision for the sake of the tourism industry,” MP Marikkar said during a parliamentary session.
Drawing a comparison with international practices, he added:
“Aircraft are allowed to fly over the Pentagon in the United States of America. Why do you want to ban aircraft from flying over the Parliament complex?”
MP Marikkar questioned members of the ruling party over the rationale behind the move, stressing that Sri Lanka should not adopt overly restrictive measures that could harm tourism and related economic activities.
