Former Deputy Leader of the United National Party, MP Ravi Karunanayake, raised concerns in Parliament about state university graduates leaving Sri Lanka within a year of completing their degrees, without fulfilling the interim agreement period.
He submitted this question to the Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, under Standing Orders 27(2).
MP Karunanayake also asked how much public money spent on educating these graduates—including Mahapola funds—affects the country’s gross domestic product.
He emphasized that it is both a national and legal obligation for graduates who benefit from taxpayer-funded education to serve the country for a minimum period before seeking opportunities abroad.
