Sajith Opposes Ravi’s Motion to Ban Ethnic and Religious-Based Parties

October 10, 2025

A contentious situation unfolded in Parliament over a private member’s motion proposed by former UNP Deputy Leader, MP Ravi Karunanayake, aimed at banning political parties with ethnic and religious identities.

The controversy arose after MP Karunanayake objected to the motion being removed from the parliamentary agenda.

Speaker Jagath Wickramaratne explained that the motion was withdrawn following a court order prohibiting legislative action to ban such parties, and that Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, along with a group of MPs, had requested its withdrawal.

MP Karunanayake responded by emphasizing that his sole intention behind the motion was to promote ethnic and religious coexistence in the country.
