Sri Lanka Launches UPI One World Digital Payment Service for Pilgrims Visiting India

Pilot initiative enables cashless transactions without Indian mobile number requirement


A pilot initiative to introduce the UPI One World digital payment service for Sri Lankan Buddhist pilgrims visiting India has been officially launched.

The Sri Lanka High Commission in India, in partnership with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), unveiled the groundbreaking initiative designed to streamline financial transactions for Sri Lankan travellers.

Seamless Digital Payment Solution

The digital payment facility enables Sri Lankan travellers to make secure, real-time payments across India without requiring an Indian mobile number, offering a modern and convenient alternative to carrying cash, according to a statement from the High Commission of Sri Lanka in New Delhi.

The launch event, held at the High Commission in New Delhi, was attended by:

  • Venerable Beragama Vimala Buddhi Thero, Administrative Secretary of the Buddhist Pilgrims’ Rest
  • Ravi Kant Sharma, In-charge of Central Government Relations, NPCI
  • Vivek Garg, In-charge of UPI Growth, NPCI

Extended Benefits for Medical Travellers

The facility will also benefit Sri Lankans travelling to India for medical treatment, providing greater financial flexibility and safety during their stay.

Strengthening Bilateral Ties

“Introducing UPI One World for Sri Lankan visitors represents a meaningful advancement in improving their travel experience and facilitating people-to-people connectivity,” the High Commission stated.

The initiative underscores the deepening cooperation between Sri Lanka and India in promoting digital innovation and ease of travel, further strengthening the digital and economic ties between the two nations.
