A powerful earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.7 struck Japan’s northeastern region on Friday, prompting the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) to issue a tsunami advisory for waves up to 1 metre (39 inches) high.
The quake occurred at 11:44 a.m. (0244 GMT) off the coast of Aomori Prefecture at a depth of 20 km (12 miles). It follows a larger 7.5-magnitude earthquake that hit the same region late on Monday.
Following Monday’s quake, authorities issued a special advisory urging residents from Hokkaido in the north to Chiba Prefecture, east of Tokyo, to remain alert for the possibility of another strong earthquake within a week.
Friday’s tremor registered 4 on Japan’s seismic intensity scale, which ranges from 1 to 7.
