December 17, 2025

The Japanese government has decided to provide an emergency grant of USD 2.5 million to Sri Lanka to support humanitarian relief efforts following the devastation caused by the recent cyclone, Japanese authorities have announced.

The emergency assistance will be implemented through the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the World Food Programme (WFP), and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), with a focus on urgent needs such as food, shelter, and essential non-food items.

Under the assistance package, Japan will allocate USD 1 million to the IOM for non-food items and emergency shelter support, USD 1 million to the WFP for food assistance, and USD 500,000 to UNICEF for water and sanitation services as well as child protection programmes.

In addition, Japan plans to provide further support through the Japan Platform (JPF), a mechanism for emergency humanitarian assistance that brings together non-governmental organizations, the private sector, and the Japanese government.

Meanwhile, a survey team from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has commenced a needs assessment to support ongoing recovery and reconstruction efforts in the affected areas.

Reaffirming its commitment to Sri Lanka, Japan stated that the country is a long-standing friend and pledged continued support to ensure the early recovery and reconstruction of communities impacted by the cyclone.
