Myanmar Strengthens Nipah Virus Monitoring, Issues Traveler Health Advisory

January 28, 2026

Myanmar’s Ministry of Health has intensified monitoring for the Nipah virus and issued health guidance for travelers, despite no confirmed cases in the country so far, according to a statement released on Tuesday.

The ministry highlighted that Myanmar hosts a large population of fruit bats, the primary natural host of the Nipah virus, and shares borders with countries where outbreaks have frequently occurred.

Travelers are advised to avoid unnecessary visits to areas with active Nipah virus cases, such as West Bengal, India. Those already in affected areas are urged to limit visits to hospitals and crowded places unless absolutely necessary.

The ministry warned that anyone experiencing suspected symptoms—including severe fever, headache, cough, difficulty breathing, confusion, or drowsiness—after visiting affected regions should immediately report to airport health departments or border health officials.

Additionally, individuals developing symptoms within 14 days of returning from such areas are urged to seek prompt medical attention and inform healthcare providers of their recent travel history for timely testing and treatment.

The public is also encouraged to report suspected symptoms among returning family members and any unusual animal deaths, such as pigs or bats, to local health authorities without delay.
