Addressing the European Parliament ahead of the high-level visit, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas said India is becoming “indispensable” to Europe’s economic resilience and signalled that the European Union is ready to deliver on a powerful new agenda with New Delhi spanning trade, security, technology and people-to-people ties.
Her remarks come as preparations intensify for the 16th India-EU Summit in New Delhi on January 27, which will be attended by the EU’s top leadership and is expected to yield a series of concrete deliverables, including progress on a long-pending Free Trade Agreement.
Describing the upcoming summit as a “pivotal moment” marked by renewed political momentum, Kallas said India and the EU are drawing closer at a time when the rules-based international order faces unprecedented pressure from wars, coercion and economic fragmentation. “Two major democracies cannot afford to hesitate,” she said, underlining the shared responsibility of India and Europe to uphold international law, the UN Charter and an effective multilateral system suited to the 21st century.
At the core of the summit will be the adoption of a new, comprehensive EU–India strategic agenda, which will guide the partnership through 2030. Kallas said leaders are expected to go beyond statements of intent and endorse concrete initiatives aimed at translating commitments into action.
The summit coincides with the visit of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Luis Santos da Costa, who will serve as Chief Guests at India’s 77th Republic Day celebrations, underscoring the growing strategic convergence between the two partners.
