Former UNP Deputy Leader MP Ravi Karunanayake has expressed concern over the controversial coal tender issue.
Speaking to the media, he said that coal should not be imported simply to claim compensation.
The MP added that coal transactions must be carried out based on the set price and existing quality standards. He explained that certificates are issued when coal is imported from the relevant country, and its quality is further checked at Norochcholai after arrival.
However, Karunanayake noted that the government must clarify the serious issue arising from reports that the coal stock in question is substandard.
He also warned that since the current coal reserves in the country are only sufficient until February or March, any delay in re-importation could create another serious problem.
