February 17, 2026

The Department of Meteorology Sri Lanka has issued an “Amber” advisory for heavy rainfall affecting several parts of the country.

The advisory, issued at 12.00 noon today (17), will remain in effect until 8.30 a.m. tomorrow (18).

Heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm is likely at some locations in the Eastern and Uva provinces, as well as in the Polonnaruwa, Matale, Nuwara Eliya, and Hambantota districts.

The general public has been advised to take adequate precautions to minimize potential damage caused by heavy rain, strong winds, and lightning associated with thundershowers.

Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain vigilant and follow official updates and safety instructions.
