Sri Lankan MP Calls for Humanitarian Appeal Over Detention of Imran Khan

February 20, 2026

An opposition Member of Parliament has tabled a motion urging the Sri Lankan government to make a humanitarian appeal regarding the detention of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan.

The adjournment motion was submitted in Parliament of Sri Lanka by Ajith P. Perera, who cited concerns over Khan’s health and wellbeing while in custody.

The motion refers to what it describes as credible reports raising humanitarian concerns and calls on the Government of Sri Lanka to engage authorities in Pakistan through diplomatic and parliamentary channels. It urges Colombo to encourage Pakistan to ensure Khan receives adequate and independent medical care.

It also proposes a humanitarian appeal for Khan’s release, restoration of his freedom, or other appropriate relief in line with due process and internationally recognised human rights standards.

The motion highlights Khan’s sporting legacy, noting that he led Pakistan to victory at the 1992 Cricket World Cup before entering politics, and is widely regarded as one of the country’s most prominent sports figures. It adds that his contribution to cricket has transcended political boundaries and fostered goodwill among cricketing nations, including Sri Lanka.

The proposal further urges the Sri Lankan government to convey the goodwill and sentiments of the Sri Lankan public—particularly the cricketing community—in recognition of Khan’s role in international cricket and sports diplomacy.

The motion concludes by reaffirming Sri Lanka’s commitment to democratic values, humanitarian principles, and international goodwill.

There has been no immediate response from the Sri Lankan government regarding the proposal.
