Minor Flood Warning Issued for Low-Lying Areas Along Mahaweli River Basin

Irrigation Department Sri Lanka has issued a potential minor flood warning valid for the next 24 hours for several low-lying areas along the Mahaweli River Basin, following rainfall received since last night (21) in parts of the catchment.

Residents in low-lying areas of Kinniya, Muttur, Kantale, Seruvila, Welikanda, Lankapura, Thamankaduwa and Dimbulagala Divisional Secretariat Divisions have been alerted to possible flooding.

The Department also warned of potential inundation along the Batticaloa–Polonnaruwa Road (Gallella area), the access road to Somawathiya Raja Maha Vihara, and surrounding areas of the temple premises.

Devotees planning to travel to Somawathiya Raja Maha Vihara are kindly requested to avoid visiting the area until further notice over the next few days.

Meanwhile, members of the public living close to the Mahaweli River in the affected areas have been urged to remain highly vigilant and take necessary precautions to protect themselves from possible flood conditions.

Disaster management authorities have also been requested to take adequate preparedness measures in view of the situation.
