Litro to Import Over 10,000 MT of Gas This Month as Authorities Move to Ease Shortage

February 22, 2026

Litro Gas Lanka Limited has announced that more than 10,000 metric tons of LPG will be imported into Sri Lanka within this month, as efforts intensify to address the ongoing gas shortage.

Litro Chairman Channa Gunawardena said three shipments are expected—two vessels carrying 3,700 metric tons each and one vessel carrying 3,900 metric tons.

He added that gas supplies are expected to increase from early next month, with additional Litro cylinders being released to the market starting March 12.

The move comes amid supply disruptions affecting LAUGFS Gas customers, many of whom have been unable to switch to Litro cylinders due to compatibility issues.

Meanwhile, Minister of Trade, Commerce, Food Security and Cooperative Development Wasantha Samarasinghe said 100,000 gas cylinders will be released to the market daily starting tomorrow.

The Minister stressed that it is the responsibility of LAUGFS Gas to ensure a continuous supply to its consumers, noting that customers have paid security deposits for their cylinders. He warned that strict action will be taken against any businesses attempting to create artificial shortages or exploit consumers for unfair commercial gain.

In addition, the Consumer Affairs Authority Sri Lanka (CAA) has launched investigations into traders suspected of hoarding gas stocks.

CAA Chairman Hemantha Samarakoon said immediate legal action will be taken against anyone found stockpiling gas to manufacture an artificial crisis.
