Electricity Tariff Hike Likely in Third Quarter, Predicts Ravi

February 27, 2026

Former Deputy Leader of the United National Party and MP Ravi Karunanayake has predicted that the government will be compelled to increase electricity tariffs in the third quarter of the year.

Speaking in an interview with the Ceylonwire.lk website, the MP said a tariff revision appears inevitable under the country’s current economic framework.

He explained that the government is required to align its expenditure with revenue targets in accordance with agreements reached with the International Monetary Fund.

According to the MP, the Fund has emphasized that state expenses must be covered through income generation, making adjustments such as electricity tariff increases difficult to avoid.

He further noted that the ongoing controversy surrounding coal imports could also have an impact, with its financial effects likely to extend into the third quarter of the year.
