Health Ministry Introduces Work-From-Home on Wednesdays to Reduce Fuel Use

March 18, 2026

The Ministry of Health has permitted officers in selected sectors to work from home every Wednesday in line with government measures to reduce fuel consumption amid the ongoing global crisis.

The directive was issued by the Secretary to the Ministry of Health and Media, Dr. Anil Jasinghe, through an official statement.

According to the statement, the decision takes effect from this week and will remain in force until further notice.

The sectors covered include all departments located in the new Ministry building on Castle Street, departments at the Malaria Control Campaign Headquarters in Narahenpita, the National Cancer Control Programme and the Health Promotion Bureau.

The order further states that essential duties related to the transport sector should be carried out from the Suwasiripaya building.

In addition, officers responsible for issuing licenses within the Food Control Administration Unit of the Environmental Health, Occupational Health and Food Safety Division are required to report to the Suwasiripaya premises on Wednesdays, as directed by the Deputy Director General.

The ministry emphasized that essential functions within these institutions must continue through appropriate alternative arrangements.

Other departments and units within the Ministry of Health have also been instructed to limit staff attendance to the minimum necessary on Wednesdays.

Accordingly, relevant officers have been requested to manage these arrangements effectively to ensure that health services continue to operate smoothly.
